Best Time of Year to Buy Flooring in Colorado
When prices, installer availability and lead times favor buyers through a Colorado year, how to time a flooring purchase separately from the install date, and a month-by-month calendar covering acclimation, weather and demand.
Ask around about the best time to buy flooring in Colorado and most answers are about sales. We'd watch three other things line up: a price you can verify, an installer who can show up when you need one, and indoor conditions that don't fight the product. We sell and install floors across the Denver metro and the Front Range, and the buyers who come out ahead treat the purchase date and the install date as two separate decisions.
Below is how our team at Colorado Carpet & Flooring in Castle Rock reads the year, plus the questions to ask any store before you commit.
Separate the Purchase Date From the Install Date
Most people expect to choose a floor and have it installed that week. In practice, ordering, delivery, acclimation and install day are separate steps. You can settle on a product in a slow month and install when the house is ready, as long as you know how long the quote holds and when the material will arrive.
Ask any store three questions before you sign. How long is this quote valid? Is the product in stock or special order, and what's the lead time? What happens to the price if the install date moves? Get all three answers written on the estimate.
A Month-by-Month Buyer's Calendar for Colorado
The availability column reflects our general experience on the Front Range, not market data. The humidity and acclimation figures come from our own installation guides.
| Months | Installer availability (our experience) | Conditions to plan around | Buyer move |
|---|---|---|---|
| January to February | Usually the shortest waits of the year | Indoor RH can sit at 12 to 20%; solid hardwood needs 7 to 10 days to acclimate | Install carpet or LVP now; add days for solid wood |
| March to April | Picks up as spring projects start | Mud season runs mid-March through May | Order now if you want a summer finish |
| May to June | Busy with move-ins and school letting out | Humidity starts climbing | Finalize products before the rush |
| July to August | Peak season, longest waits | Monsoon humidity; keep hardwood homes under 55% RH | Favor in-stock products and flexible dates |
| September to November | Usually lighter than summer | Mild weather; humidifiers come back on before the first hard freeze | Strong window to buy and install before the holidays |
| December | Holiday schedules shorten the work week | Dry heating-season air returns | Buy now for a January install |
Two of our existing guides cover the ends of that calendar. Our winter flooring installation tips put January estimate-to-install time at 1 to 2 weeks against 6 to 8 weeks in peak summer. If you're aiming for a summer finish, the summer renovation planning timeline works backward from mid-July.
Why Installer Availability Beats the Sticker Price
The trap in timing a purchase around a promotion: material is only part of the installed total. Labor, pad, removal, subfloor prep and transitions sit on the same quote. A lower material price paired with a six-week July wait can cost more than it saves when movers or a listing date are on the calendar.
While the consensus says "wait for a sale," in practice the bigger lever is booking install time when crews are open. That's why fall and winter tend to work well for buyers: you get more choice of dates and less pressure on the schedule.
Buying in November, installing in February
A pattern we see every year: a homeowner finds the right product during holiday shopping, but the remodel or move-in won't be ready until after New Year's. The fix is sequencing. Confirm in writing how long the price holds and when material will be delivered. Make sure the HVAC is running at normal settings, since our hardwood acclimation guide calls for that at least 5 days before hardwood arrives. Then budget acclimation: 7 to 10 days for solid hardwood in January and February, 3 to 5 days for engineered, 72 hours for laminate and 48 hours for LVP.
Timing by Flooring Type
- Carpet: installs in 1 to 2 days for an average home and needs no long acclimation, so it's the easiest product to drop into any month.
- LVP and laminate: 1 to 3 days to install. Glue-down LVP needs the subfloor at 65 degrees F or above during installation and for 48 hours after, which matters on cold winter slabs.
- Engineered hardwood: 3 to 5 days of acclimation, then 2 to 4 days of install. Its stability makes it a year-round option here.
- Solid hardwood: 5 to 7 days of acclimation minimum, longer in deep winter. If your schedule is tight, buy it in fall and install before the driest weeks.
How to Compare Prices Without Chasing a Sale Date
- Compare installed totals, not per-square-foot material prices, with the same pad, removal, prep and trim on every quote.
- Use the price match: if you find the same product for less elsewhere, our price match guarantee covers it, which takes the pressure off waiting for a perfect month.
- Price it early: every free flooring estimate we write is detailed, written and carries no obligation, so you can price now and decide later.
