The Complete Guide to Non-VOC Flooring: Why Colorado Families Are Making the Switch

Everything you need to know about Non-VOC flooring—what it is, why it matters in Colorado's sealed homes, and how TCX by National Flooring is leading the healthy home revolution.

Why This Matters for Colorado Families

Colorado homes are sealed tight for energy efficiency, which means indoor air pollutants from flooring have nowhere to go. The EPA estimates indoor air can be 2-5x more polluted than outdoor air. Non-VOC flooring eliminates one of the biggest sources of those pollutants.

What Are VOCs and Why Should You Care?

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound. These are chemicals that off-gas at room temperature from adhesives, finishes, and the flooring materials themselves. You know that "new floor smell" after installation? That is not a sign of quality. It is literally chemicals entering your lungs.

Common VOCs found in flooring include formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, and ethylene glycol. Exposure symptoms range from headaches and dizziness to long-term respiratory issues. Children and pets are especially vulnerable because they spend more time close to the floor and have faster respiratory rates.

The challenge is that many products labeled "low-VOC" still emit measurable chemicals. There is a significant difference between "low" and "non." At Colorado Carpet & Flooring, we only recommend products that have been independently tested and verified as truly non-VOC. Browse our luxury vinyl collection for options we stand behind.

VOC Myths Busted

  • MYTH

"If I can't smell it, there are no VOCs."

Many VOCs are odorless. Formaldehyde concentrations can be well above safe levels before you detect any scent.

  • MYTH

"VOCs only matter during the first week."

Some flooring products off-gas for years. Laminate with urea-formaldehyde resins can emit chemicals for 3-5 years after installation.

  • MYTH

"All hardwood flooring is natural and VOC-free."

The wood is natural, but the finish, stain, and adhesive often are not. Oil-based polyurethane finishes are among the highest VOC emitters in the flooring industry.

  • MYTH

"Low-VOC and Non-VOC are the same thing."

Low-VOC means reduced emissions, not zero. Non-VOC means the product has been tested and certified to emit zero volatile organic compounds. The difference matters.

How Colorado's Climate Makes VOCs Worse

Colorado's high altitude and dry climate create a perfect storm for VOC concentration. Here is why our state is uniquely affected:

First, our homes are sealed tighter than in most states. Between high-efficiency windows, insulated walls, and weather stripping designed to keep out sub-zero temps, there is very little natural ventilation. VOCs emitted by your flooring recirculate through your HVAC system rather than dissipating outdoors.

Second, our low humidity (often below 20% in winter) can actually accelerate off-gassing in certain materials. Dry conditions cause adhesives and finishes to cure differently, sometimes releasing VOCs at a faster rate than manufacturers expect. This is something we see firsthand in homes from Castle Rock to Highlands Ranch.

Third, many Colorado families spend more time indoors during winter months, increasing their cumulative exposure. If you are running a furnace with recirculated air from October through April, your home's air quality depends almost entirely on what is inside those four walls. Your carpet choice and hard-surface flooring are the largest surface areas in your home.

We started carrying TCX because our customers kept asking for flooring that would not affect their family's health. After testing dozens of "eco-friendly" products that still emitted measurable VOCs, TCX was the first line that delivered on the non-VOC promise with independent lab verification.

What sets TCX apart is their manufacturing process. Rather than adding VOC-reducing treatments after production (which wears off over time), they engineered the formulation itself to eliminate volatile compounds from the start. The result is a floor that tests at zero VOCs on day one and stays at zero for the life of the product.

Non-VOC Options by Flooring Type

Non-VOC flooring is not limited to one material. Here is what is available across every major category:

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP): This is where the most options exist. TCX's LVP line is our top recommendation, but brands like Shaw's Floorte series also offer GREENGUARD Gold certified planks. Look for products with rigid SPC cores rather than WPC, as the stone-polymer composite formulation tends to be cleaner. See our full luxury vinyl selection.

Hardwood: The wood itself is not the issue; the finish is. Look for UV-cured or water-based polyurethane finishes. Pre-finished hardwood generally emits less than site-finished because the curing happens in a factory under controlled conditions. Our hardwood collection includes pre-finished options from Hallmark and Provenza.

Laminate: Traditional laminate uses formaldehyde-based resins in its HDF core. Non-VOC laminate uses alternative binders like MDI resin. TCX's laminate line is our recommendation here. Check our laminate options.

Carpet: Non-VOC carpet exists, but it requires attention to the backing, adhesive, and fiber treatment in addition to the carpet fiber itself. Solution-dyed nylon or PET fibers with felt backing are the cleanest options. Visit our carpet showroom page for available styles.

How to Verify a Product Is Truly Non-VOC

Marketing claims are everywhere. Here is how to cut through the noise and verify what you are actually getting:

Your Non-VOC Verification Checklist

  • Ask for the SDS (Safety Data Sheet). Every flooring product has one. If VOC content is listed above 0 g/L, it is not non-VOC regardless of marketing.
  • Look for GREENGUARD Gold certification. This is the strictest indoor air quality standard. Regular GREENGUARD is not the same. Gold is the one used for schools and healthcare.
  • Check for FloorScore certification. Developed by SCS Global Services, FloorScore tests finished flooring for indoor air emissions. It is the most recognized standard in the industry.
  • Verify CARB Phase 2 compliance. California Air Resources Board Phase 2 is the strictest U.S. regulation on formaldehyde emissions. All flooring sold in California must meet it, but not all products sold elsewhere do.
  • Ask about the adhesive separately. The flooring may be non-VOC, but the adhesive used to install it might not be. Always confirm both.
  • Request third-party lab results. Reputable manufacturers will share independent testing data. If they cannot produce it, be skeptical of their claims.

When you shop at Colorado Carpet & Flooring, we have already done this verification for every product in our showroom. We will show you the certifications and lab results so you can make an informed decision. Visit our Shop at Home service to see samples in your own environment.

Adam's Take

"I have two young kids at home. When I learned how much conventional flooring off-gasses, I replaced every floor in my own house with Non-VOC products. It is not a sales pitch for me. It is personal. I will not sell a product I would not put in my own living room."
